South Dakota State University invites you to participate in the Tenth International Conference on Forensic Inference and Statistics. The University is honored to host ICFIS 2017. The aim of the symposium is to bring together the diverse scientific communities involved in the various aspects of forensic interpretation and statistics. The themes of the conference can be found here.
Developments in forensic disciplines are fast and have an increasing impact on law enforcement and the justice system. Evidence can only be of value when it is properly gathered, analyzed, evaluated, and communicated. For this to happen, there needs to be sound statistical and logical inference methods, and good communication between scientists, lawyers, judges and other stakeholders of the criminal justice system.
ICFIS was first held in 1990 at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh Scotland. Since then it took place alternatively in Europe and in the U.S., every 3 years. Most recently, the conference took place in Leiden (NL) in 2014, Seattle (WA) in 2011 and Lausanne (CH) in 2008.
In 2017, the conference will be organized by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the South Dakota State University. South Dakota State University was founded in 1881 and is located in Brookings, in the south-eastern corner of South Dakota. It is the largest of the six public universities in South Dakota and offers nearly 200 programs to more than 12,000 students. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has 22 Faculty and offers 5 degrees (BS Mathematics, MS in Mathematics, MS in Statistics, MS in Data Science, Ph.D. in Computational Science and Statistics) to more than 140 undergraduate and 80 graduate students.
The conference will take place in Minneapolis, which is located in the neighboring state of Minnesota. Minneapolis is a major city in the Midwest region of the United States. It is known for its parks and lakes and for its many cultural landmarks and events. The conference will take place downtown Minneapolis, within walking distance of several hotels, restaurants and shopping areas. Downtown Minneapolis is very well connected by public transport to Minneapolis-St-Paul international airport, which has direct flight connections to most major cities in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
