IDC Retail Insights eCommerce Conference

Thursday, April 26, 2012

The competitive dynamics of online retail in the UK are changing. Retailers can no longer rely on the growth drivers of past decades, such as increasing broadband penetration and growing numbers of online shoppers, as these are now reaching their peak. Furthermore, the online retail market is crowded and competition is becoming fierce.

As a result of these trends, sales through the channel - although significant - are beginning to slow. Nevertheless, online remains the best opportunity for retail sales growth. IDC Retail Insights' CIO survey found that:

  • nearly 40% of UK retailers plan to invest in new or upgraded ecommerce add-ons such as recommendation systems or product information management (PIM).
  • over 30% of retailers plan to introduce social media tools for business purposes in the next 12–24 months.
The fast moving dynamics of the online retail space, from a point of view of both the disruptive technology and changing habits of consumers, means that retailers must constantly re-evaluate business, process and IT investment strategies.  This event offers a great opportunity for retail organisations to learn ways of maximising online revenues, thinking strategically about websites and focusing on the online customer experience.
