Improving Mental and Behavioral Health Care Services

California’s mental and behavioral health care system faces many challenges and opportunities. Nearly 1 in 6 Californians has a mental health need, and about 1 in 20 suffers from a serious mental illness that can make life difficult. Among children in California, nearly 1 in 13 suffers from mental illness. Additionally, California’s poorest areas have the highest rates of mental illness but also have the fewest mental health specialists. These factors combine to make mental health care delivery a challenge for all stakeholders. This seminar will explore the challenges of emergency and post emergency care at crowded hospitals, the state’s mental health workforce shortage, best practices to manage mental and behavioral health conditions, and other opportunities to improve our health care system.
