Kathy Eklund, RDH, associate professor and director of infection control and occupational health at The Forsyth Institute

The goal of an infection control program is to prevent health-care associated infections, injuries, and illnesses in health-care personnel. Key guidance documents from the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other relevant recommendations will be reviewed. Strategies, resources, and tools for developing best practices and maintaining an effective and efficient infection control program will be provided. Occupational health components of an infection prevention and control program, exposure prevention and post-exposure management, instrument processing and sterility assurance, environmental infection control and operatory processing, and dental water quality will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the basic concepts and foundational principles of “Best Practices”
  • Select credible resources for best practices for infection prevention and control
  • Develop and adapt best practices for site-specific clinical settings
  • Determine if a best practice is working
  • Identify ways to share best practices with others
