In 2005, it was estimated that 98,000 persons die annually due to healthcare error; however, 10 years later in 2015, a more realistic estimate indicated that as many as 400,000 patient deaths resulted annually from healthcare error. Given this staggering figure, full and swift implementation of established, rigorous patient healthcare quality and safety competencies is critical.

The overarching goal of Infusing Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Into Your Curriculum is to provide nurse educators with the knowledge and strategies necessary to integrate established patient healthcare quality and safety competencies into education programs for nurses and for nursing students in order to improve quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all.
