This conference features a dynamic program designed to educate and enlighten attendees on the increasingly important subject of health and wellness of commercial drivers.
Keynote addresses will be made by leaders in the commercial transportation and occupational health fields and presentations and discussion panels will be presented on nearly 40 peer-reviewed papers by experts in research and the practice of occupational health.
The program will be divided into three parts:
- Part I will identify the most serious health risks faced by commercial drivers, their companies, and their families.
- Part II will highlight issues employers face in establishing health and wellness programs for their employees (especially drivers) and their families.
- Part III will document what is known about the costs, benefits and return on investment (ROI) of implementing driver health and wellness programs, with the goal of providing concrete, take-away solutions.
The conference has three objectives:
1. Present evidence-based benefits—both return-on-investment and personal—of health and wellness programs for commercial drivers and their employers, including their role in a company's human capital strategy and identifying the cost–benefits of health and wellness programs. These will include case studies, and recent policy developments affecting employee health and wellbeing.
2. Highlight the latest research examining the many health issues impacting performance and safety of commercial drivers. These include at least: obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular issues, diabetes; physical fitness, diet and nutrition, sleep disorders, and more.
3. Showcase best practices and effective corporate experiences with health and wellness programs from other industries that provide solid examples for transportation companies to adopt.
A number of renowned national and international health and wellness experts, researchers, transportation company leaders, and policymakers will be featured as keynote speakers and panelists.
Topics will include the following—and more:
- Identification of serious health risks to commercial motor vehicle drivers and employers;
- Research on the effects of health and wellness risks on commercial driver safety and performance;
- Cost–benefit and return-on-investment analyses of effective health and wellness programs for small and large truck and bus carriers;
- The impact of targeted or focused employee health and wellness initiatives—such as physical exercise, diet and nutrition, weight control, smoking cessation, disease management, and making healthy behavioral changes;
- Case studies and lessons—positive and negative—for implementing health and wellness programs, particularly in truck and bus motor carrier companies;
- Pointers on effective implementation of H&W programs in large and small companies; and
