Introduction to Emergency Ultrasound / Spring 2018

Program Overview

Welcome to the Introduction to Emergency Ultrasound course presented by the Ultrasound Division of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center.  Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become an integral component to bedside patient care in EDs across the country.  It saves time with both diagnosis and procedures, which reduces patient time spent in the ED and improves patient satisfaction.  Whether you are looking to expand your skill set and learning POCUS for the first time, or you are feeling a bit rusty with your technique and need a refresher, this is the course for you.

This is a two-day didactic and hands-on course that is designed for the ED provider, delivered to you by ED providers.  Altogether, our instructors have decades of experience using POCUS in our daily clinical practice and teaching POCUS to EM residents and other departments within URMC.  You will learn need-to-know techniques and image interpretation to be able to incorporate this skill into your practice, and have the opportunity to practice on real-life standardized patient models.  In addition, you will also earn up to 13 CME credits if you complete the entire two-day course.

We are proud to present this Emergency Ultrasound CME course for our local ED providers in the greater Rochester and Finger Lakes region.  Physicians and APPs are welcome to participate.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

1. Describe the indications and limitations of core emergency US applications - including trauma, cardiac, aorta, biliary, 1st trimester pregnancy, renal, thoracic, soft tissue, and procedural guidance.

2. Identify normal vs. abnormal US image findings in each of the core emergency US applications.

3. Demonstrate ability to correctly acquire the required US views for each core emergency US application on standardized patients.
