IO STEM (the Imperial Oil Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics education initiative) is a joint commitment of the University of Calgary, Werklund School of Education and the Imperial Oil Foundation to foster the design and implementation of engaging learning experiences for K-12 students who will become the scientists and engineers of the future. To that end, the Galileo Educational Network provided the initial professional learning series in 2015-16 to build STEM capacities for teachers, learning leaders and discipline specialists.
The 2016-17 series is designed for new participants who have a teaching assignment that will enable them to enact the professional learning directly with students.
IO STEM K-12 Professional Learning Series 2016-17
The Imperial Oil Foundation is supporting teacher professional learning to build capacity in STEM teaching and learning within Partner Research School jurisdictions. Teachers, learning leaders, administrators and curriculum specialists are invited to participate in this four-part, design-based professional learning series focused upon leading and building capacity for designing effective student learning tasks and assessment practices in STEM.
The intent of this series is to explore the implications (structures, supports, processes) required for teachers and school leaders to further promote both teacher and student engagement in STEM. During the series, participants will have opportunities to collaboratively design learning activities alongside disciplinary and pedagogical experts from the Galileo Educational Network and from the Werklund School of Education. Participants will also be invited to participate in a research study investigating the impact of professional learning upon STEM culture in schools.
