Course Overview:
The University of Iowa Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to offer a unique educational experience for Emergency Medicine providers. The Iowa Emergency Medicine Fundamentals Course is a CME experience unlike any others. This two part course is based on the “flipped” classroom educational model. In part one of the course, learners will remotely view a series of lectures given by Emergency Medicine faculty from the University of Iowa. These lectures can be viewed at the learners’ own pace, at times convenient to them. In part two of the course, learners will spend one week in Iowa City participating in a variety of educational activities. One such activity, case-based small group discussions, is centered on the information gained during part one of the course. These small group discussions offer the learners the opportunity to interact directly and ask questions from the teaching Emergency Medicine faculty. Because of the unique setting, faculty will give individualized attention to each of the learners.

In addition to the small group sessions, learners will have the opportunity to participate in a range of hands-on procedure workshops covering both basic and advanced Emergency Medicine procedures. Concepts taught in the small groups are then reinforced through the use of high-fidelity simulation exercises in our state of the art simulation center. Learners will also have the ability to spend time shadowing in the University of Iowa Emergency Department, a Level I trauma center and tertiary referral center for the region. Finally, content experts including Emergency Medicine – Critical Care faculty, Emergency Medicine pharmacist, and Departmental leadership are able to share their unique skillset and insight into specialized areas of Emergency Medicine through a series of lectures and symposiums. Because of the emphasis on hands on experience, and individualized attention, registration is limited to a maximum of 8 learners per course. The Iowa Emergency Medicine Fundamentals Course covers the foundational educational material of Emergency Medicine in a distinctive format that is fundamentally different from other CME courses and will provide learners with an outstanding educational experience.
