ISAE 2018 March Luncheon

When Disaster Strikes

Session Description:
When does an emergency become a disaster? This interactive and intriguing luncheon will feature two speakers, the first of whom will relay some lessons learned from an event cancellation he experienced last year when Hurricane Irma hit Florida. Our second speaker will share information about some of the critical events that have occurred in Sangamon County over the past 20 years. Listen to learn about their back-stories. Four times since 2002, events in Sangamon County have resulted in Presidential Disaster Declarations. How did we manage that? Bad things are bound to happen again around here. What might be our greatest vulnerability going forward?

Learning Objectives:
1.) Attendees will discover the basics and importance of having Event Cancel Insurance.
2.) Attendees will understand the claims process – What to do and expect.
3.) Attendees will learn the difference between an emergency and a disaster, and how a county qualifies for a Presidential Disaster Declaration.
4.) Attendees will discover which hazards we are most vulnerable to in Sangamon County.

About the Presenters:
Aaron McEvoy started working at Association Central Inc (ACi) in January 2013. In November 2013 he became the Executive Director of the American Osteopathic College of Anesthesiologists (AOCA), one of ACi’s clients. AOCA is a national organization whose mission is to promote the osteopathic concept of disease, advance the standards of practice, and provide opportunty for study and training in the art and science of anesthesiology. AOCA oversees thirteen residency programs and two Fellowship programs across the country. The other primary purpose is providing continuous medical education (CME) for practicing physicians. Delivery of CMEs is done at two meetings a year – our March meeting in Chicago and our Annual Convention typically in September in various cities across America. And that is where our story begins…………………

David Butt is in his 23rd year as the Emergency Manager of Sangamon County. Ahead of becoming a pensioner on June 30, 2018, he will be kicking off his “retirement tour” of speaking to local clubs and organizations by joining the ISAE on March 26 to recall with us some of the noteworthy events that have occurred in the Springfield area over the past couple of decades. Whether any of these events qualify as disasters or not is always subject to debate. He’ll recount a few for us and we can ask about some that we may recall. Can disasters be prevented or are our attempts to mitigate their impact the best we can do?
