Demystifying the Law: Legal Resources for CACs in Texas

Summary

This advanced leadership training spans one (1) day and is specifically designed for executive directors, program directors, and other staff members of a children's advocacy center who are responsible for handling legal issues.

Participants will explore the legal system within which Texas CACs operate and common legal issues encountered by local centers. Specific topics include preparing for interaction in the criminal and civil court systems, anticipating issues before they arise, responding to records requests and subpoenas, and when and how to hire an attorney for legal counsel. The curriculum is developed to provide legal guidance on effectively supporting and facilitating joint investigations of child abuse.

Format: The format of this high-level program includes lecture and discussion, the review of relevant statutes and case law, and video resources.

Schedule:
September 18th 8:30am-4:30pm

Prerequisites: Current employment with a local children’s advocacy center in the state of Texas.

Approval Process: Registering for this training does not guarantee acceptance. Applicants will be notified of their final approval status at a minimum of three (3) weeks prior to the start of the training.* It is highly recommended to secure hotel accommodations at the time of application in order to secure the best rate; hotel availability decreases and rates increase as the training dates near.

*Offering quality, professional training in a classroom environment is a key priority for CACTX. We feel this format is the most conducive to effective learning as it allows for small group activities, one-on-one coaching, and ample opportunity for Q&A. However, given the inherent size of classroom training, we have to carefully manage the registration process. Our goal is to ensure that participants have timely access to the training sessions they are in need of in order to do their important jobs effectively. In reviewing registrations, our process is to assess both the registrant CAC’s needs as well as the registrant’s completion of course prerequisites.
