Managing the Communication Challenges of Demenita Tuesday 21st 2012, Bristol
This workshop gives health and social care staff a thorough grounding in the communication challenges of dementia. It introduces practical techniques that can be implemented to help staff discover ways of achieving better communication with your patients. The workshop has also been developed to encourage care staff to develop new skills which will ultimately support their well being and lead to improved job satisfaction. Workshop participants will consider - Why people with dementia behave in certain ways
- The transitional stages of dementia and managing and adapting your communication techniques
- The power and importance of non-verbal communication
- The benefits of Awareness/Acceptance/Empathy
- Ways to deal with anger and frustration - yours and the patient’s
- Techniques to stimulate discussion, participation and interaction
- How communication is at the centre of better quality of life
The workshop will encourage the development of good interpersonal skills with the use of different group activities. You will look at techniques to keep people mentally active and benefit by learning from personal challenges and experiences.
Attendance at this workshop will:
- Help to support staff and manage people with dementia more effectively
- Help to improve the quality of life for residents with dementia
- Support residents who do not have dementia and their relatives and fellow staff
- Support the efficiency and effectiveness of care staff
Delegates will be requested to do some preparatory work
Format
Workshop with short lectures, reflective interactice exercises, and small group facilitated discussions with rehearsal of skills.The short lectures will provide the focus for small group sessions in which participants are able to share experience and pool knowledge, enabling critical comparison of their skills with their peers.
