This training consists of 4 3-hour modules offered on 4 separate days and was developed by the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence (MCEDV) to meet the requirement for training for Psychologists, Licensed Clinical Social Workers, and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors, as described in L.D. 1238 (126th Legis. 2013).  

February 8, 2021: Module 1  Domestic Abuse: Foundations | 3 hours total

Part A 9:30 AM- 11:00

Participants will be able to:

• Define domestic abuse and trauma
• Examine the multitude of barriers to safety that batterers create for their partners and family members

Part B 1:00 PM- 2:30

Participants will be able to:

• Identify the tactics that batterers employ to obtain and maintain power and control over their partners and family members

February 9, 2021: Module 2: Domestic Abuse: Addressing the Lasting Impact | 3 hours total

Part A 9:30 AM- 11:00 

Participants will be able to:

• Discuss the impact of trauma on the brain
• Identify several short and long-term health impacts of domestic violence
• Recognize the importance of accountable language
• Define “intersectionality”

Part B 1:00 PM- 2:30

Participants will be able to:

• Describe particular challenges facing survivors of Multi-Abuse Trauma
• Define and examine “confirmation bias”
• Examine impact and intersection of abuser behavior on children

February 15, 2021: Module 3: Domestic Abuse: Intervention Strategies | 3 hours total

Part A 9:00 AM- 11:00

Participants will be able to:

• Examine best practice when working with a client who has been identified as a batterer
• Analyze batterer tactics of control as they relate to seeking professional help

Part B 1:00 PM- 2:30

Participants will be able to:

• Distinguish between appropriate roles for mental health professionals and those for domestic violence advocates
• Identify screening strategies they can use in their practice.
• Describe basic safety planning strategies, including how to refer to a domestic violence resource center
• Define the difference between risk analysis and evidence-based risk assessment

February 16, 2021: Module 4 Domestic Abuse: Trauma-Informed and Culturally Competent Responses | 3 hours total

Part A 9:30 AM- 11:00

Participants will be able to:

• Discuss trauma-informed strategies for working with DV survivors
• Define and examine the impact of historical trauma and the nexus with using an anti-oppression framework

Part B 1:00 PM- 2:30

Participants will be able to:

• List strategies for addressing secondary trauma that you as a provider may experience
• Discuss trauma-informed strategies for working with survivors
• Analyze the barriers and resources faith provides to both survivors and abusers
• Describe various aspects of culturally competent services and list culturally specific domestic violence resources in Maine
