Medical Rehabilitation Webinar:
Latest Research on Repair and Rehabilitation Strategies for People with
Spinal Cord Injury

Summary

The field of spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation is a rapidly developing one. There are weekly and, in some cases, daily advances in our understanding of how to repair the spinal cord after trauma and the most efficacious and cost-effective interventions to facilitate functional recovery. In order to provide the best care to their patients with SCI, clinicians must be aware of the evidence related to repair strategies, the potential impact of this research on their patients, and the recent advances in therapeutic interventions. This presentation will provide an overview of the issues that researchers are addressing and the challenges that they face related to repair of the spinal cord after SCI. The presenter will also discuss the current evidence related to current repair strategies, as well as that related to rehabilitation interventions used to facilitate functional recovery in people with SCI. Finally, the presenter will discuss mechanisms for facilitating research and clinical care for people with SCI and promoting international discussion and efforts toward improved outcomes in people with SCI.

Webinar participants should be able to:

  • Identify key research questions related to SCI recovery and rehabilitation.

  • Discuss issues of repair strategies for SCI as they pertain to SCI research and rehabilitation.

  • Describe research being done related to restoration of function after SCI.

  • Identify ways to incorporate evidence in SCI research into the clinical setting.

  • Discuss mechanisms for facilitation of SCI research and translation of evidence into practice; i.e. the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine Spinal Cord Injury Special Interest Group and its initiatives.
