Medical Rehabilitation Webinar:
Opportunities to Improve Access to Inpatient
Rehabilitation Services by Focusing on Acute Care Utilization Parameters

Summary

Regulatory pressures have renewed interest among acute care providers to focus on specific areas of utilization, such as length of stay, hospital readmission rates, and avoidable days. These metrics have significant implications for acute care hospitals regarding reimbursement and margin, and many facilities are searching aggressively for opportunities to improve their measures. For these reasons, inpatient rehabilitation units and hospitals have unique opportunities to leverage their services in coordination with acute care hospitals to provide more efficient levels of care for patients. From the rehabilitation perspective, potential areas for improvement and growth include more timely and streamlined processes for admissions to rehabilitation settings. Specific areas of interest may include management of the internal and external referral and admission processes to minimize length of stay and efficiency of rehabilitation consultation by acute care to reduce onset days. These data can then be used by the rehabilitation team to improve system processes and concerns, such as effectiveness of acute care in consultation of the rehabilitation team, acute care therapy consultation, preadmission rehabilitation consultation and assessments, insurance verification, bed assignment, and admission times to rehabilitation. With improvements in these areas, rehabilitation can provide direct benefits to acute care customers to determine appropriate levels of care earlier in the acute care stay and allow for improved collaboration between acute care and inpatient rehabilitation facilities.

Webinar participants should be able to:

  • Identify and understand the regulatory pressures that cause acute care hospitals to focus on length of stay, hospital readmission rates, and avoidable days.
  • Recognize internal admission processes that help with the efficiency of transitioning patients from acute care to the rehabilitation setting.
  • Define measurable outcomes that can facilitate change in acute care and rehabilitation facilities to improve the overall effectiveness of care.
