Medications and Older Adults

As the population in the United States continues to age, health care providers are obligated to stay current on evidence-based care for older adults. That is why the Center for Lifelong Learning at the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing teamed up with the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Pharmacy and the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Programs (GWEPs) at UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University and East Carolina University to offer an interdisciplinary program focused on one of the biggest health threats to older adults: medications.

While older adults often have trouble accessing essential medications, they make up a large proportion of medication consumers in the United States, with most older adults taking as many as 6 medications at any given time. Unfortunately, older adults also experience more harmful side effects from those medications, often leading to increased morbidity, increased dependence, disability, hospitalization and even death. At this day-long program, expert speakers will give participants the tools needed to navigate this problem through the discussion of new medication-centered initiatives from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS); resources available to help with medication access issues; techniques of assessing risks and benefits of specific medications; and interventions that enhance medication safety in older adults, including de-prescribing.

You will not want to wait to register, as this program is bound to become one of our most popular continuing education offerings! Sign up today and mark your calendar for April 20, 2018, for Medications and Older Adults at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill.

Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.
