Malignant Melanoma is one of the few cancers with a rising incidence in the United States. It is curable in its early stages, but advanced disease is associated with a poor prognosis. After decades of therapeutic futility, better understanding of the molecular biology of this disease has led to breakthroughs in drug development in melanoma. In 2011, two new drugs were approved by the US FDA for the treatment of advanced melanoma. This activity aims to disseminate information about the optimal integration of new agents in the current management of melanoma. Similarly, changes in our understanding of the prognostic indicators in melanoma (e.g., pathology, sentinel node mapping) will be highlighted in this activity as it directly impacts clinical practice and will enable the attendee to apply this information in specific patient cases.
