It gives me great pleasure to welcome delegates to the 36th annual conference of the Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia (MERGA). Over the past four years MERGA conferences have been held in Singapore, Alice Springs, Fremantle, and Wellington, and so it's time in 2013 for the conference to return to Australia's eastern seaboard and the city of Melbourne. The University of Melbourne provides an excellent venue for our conference, together with an experienced and energetic organising team. The conference program offers stimulating research sessions and plenty of opportunities for social interaction with old and new colleagues. As a bonus our conference overlaps with the biennial conference of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, held at the same venue. I hope MERGA members will take advantage of the opportunities offered by both conferences for conversations about mathematics education research and practice.
