Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a directive, client-centered counseling style that enhances motivation for change by helping to clarify and resolve ambivalence. Participants will learn techniques such as reflective listening, delivering feedback, summarizing, decisional balancing, and developing change plans. Strategies for translating MI principals in action will be discussed (e.g. expressing empathy, avoiding argument and dealing with resistance). This training will also focus on strategies for increasing motivation, self-efficacy and optimism utilizing case examples, role-playing, and peer feedback as methods to incorporate new skills learned. In addition, participants will practice motivational interviewing techniques and strategies through role playing and discussion with particular focus on:

CEU's are available free of charge for MSWs, LAPCs and LMFTs. This program has been approved for six continuing education credit hours by the National Association of Social Workers CT and meets the continuing education criteria for CT Social Work Licensure renewal.
