Attendance Charter

NANOG offers a variety of programs including periodic NANOG meetings, as well as other events of a regional and educational nature that are attended by its Members, those involved in Internet operations, and various sponsors.NANOG encourages passionate and vigorous debate at its events regarding technical and operational issues concerning the Internet. NANOG does expect, however, that each person in attendance at a NANOG event, or an event hosted by a NANOG sponsor in connection with a NANOG event, will conduct themselves appropriately and act in a thoroughly professional manner with respect for all others in attendance.  

NANOG expects that all attendees, employees, contractors and sponsors shall act in accordance with the following guidelines as established and amended, from time to time, by the NANOG Board of Directors.

Attendance Guidelines

The following activities are not permitted at NANOG activities or events, physical or digital:

  • Disruption of meeting activities, including social events
  • Sexual harassment or physical assault of any other person
  • Engaging in any activity that discriminates or is offensive related to gender, gender identity, gender expression, sex, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, age, socioeconomic status or family status
  • Distribution or consumption of alcohol in hotel space contracted by NANOG and not served by hotel-licensed providers
  • Engaging in an activity which is illegal, endangers the safety of others, or violates NANOG’s or its sponsors’ contracts with venues or contractors
  • Audio or video recording of the few sessions where such recording is not permitted
  • Acting in a manner that prevents NANOG from fulfilling its mission
  • Acting in a manner that reflects negatively on NANOG, its members, attendees, employees or contractors

Attendance Enforcement Policy

  • Any person in attendance at a NANOG or NANOG Sponsor event who feels these guidelines have not been followed should immediately contact the Executive Director or any other NANOG staff member.
  • Any such reports at such events shall be investigated by the NANOG Executive Director, who is authorized to determine (a) whether or not a breach of such professional conduct has occurred and (b) an appropriate remedy, which could include, but is not necessarily limited to, the person being given a warning, removal from the meeting and/or the event, or banned from attending future NANOG events.
  • If such person feels that any such remedy imposed upon them is unfair, they should contact any member of Board of Directors.

NANOG Attendee List Statement

Use of the NANOG Attendee Page is for informational purposes only. Any use for marketing, sales, or other uses prohibited by our Attendance Charter are subject to removal of both offending persons and companies from the NANOG meeting and potential loss of sponsorship opportunities, current and future.

Mail List Charter

The NANOG mailing list is established to provide a forum for the exchange of technical information and the discussion of specific implementation issues that require cooperation among network service providers. In order to continue to provide a useful forum for discussion of relevant technical issues. The NANOG mail list is governed by the following:

Pre-Posting Guide

Our pre-posting guide for messages to the NANOG e-mail list:

  1. Does my email have operational/technical content?
  2. Would I be interested in reading this email?
  3. Would 10,000 other Internet engineers want to read this?

Acceptable Use Policy

  1. Discussion will focus on Internet operational and technical issues as described in the Bylaws of NANOG.
  2. Postings of issues inconsistent with the Bylaws are prohibited.
  3. Cross posting is prohibited.
  4. Postings that include foul language, character assassination, and lack of respect for other participants are prohibited.
  5. Product marketing is prohibited.
  6. Postings of political, philosophical, and legal nature are prohibited.
  7. Using list as source for private marketing initiatives is prohibited.
  8. Autoresponders sending mail either to the list or to the poster are prohibited.

Individuals who violate the Acceptable Use Policy will be contacted and asked to adhere to the above.

Meeting Speaker Registration Fee Waiver Policy

The NANOG registration fee is waived for:

  • General Session presentations: the conference registration fee will be waived for a maximum of one speaker.

  • General Session panels: conference registration fees will be waived for one panel moderator and all panelists.

  • Tracks: conference registration fees will be waived for one moderator.

  • Tutorials: conference registration fees will be waived for one instructor.

NANOG Student Registration Fee Policy

College or university students that are enrolled in courses leading to a baccalaureate or graduate degree when the NANOG meeting occurs can attend the meeting for $100. Student registrations are limited to 20 per meeting and available on a first-come, first-served registration basis. Student verification will be required.

A student must verify their enrollment status by sending a copy of their class schedule by email to NANOG-Support.

Information for Media Professionals

Members of the media who wish to receive complimentary attendance to NANOG require prior approval from the NANOG Executive Director. This approval process vets the publication or organization as to whether it is valid (i.e. has something to do with the Internet, Network, Technology, IT etc) and can meet the general aims of the NANOG Conference (appropriate PR, publicity, etc). The NANOG Executive Director will also work with the publication or organization on a future article about the conference.

As part of the approval process, the NANOG Executive Director will provide direction to the media as to who and what they can photograph. Taking photographs without the express prior consent from those being photographed is not permitted.

Once the media request has been approved, their attendance at NANOG will be by complimentary registration and they will receive a special badge with "MEDIA" written in large letters which they MUST wear while covering the conference.
