Neurology for the Primary Care Provider XXIV: Updates in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Common Neurologic Disorders

The University of Rochester Institute for Innovative Education is pleased to announce the upcoming event, Neurology for the Primary Care Provider XXIV.  This educational program includes a one-day conference that will take place on Thursday, December 7, 2017, at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester, NY.

Program Overview

Course Description

Now in its 24th year, Neurology for the Primary Care Provider continues to attract a large audience of clinicians who manage patients with acute and chronic neurologic disorders in diverse settings.  Each year, over 100 health care professionals – approximately one half of whom are physicians – attend this conference.  The program highlights the most recent diagnostic and treatment advances in the field of neurology, utilizing a highly interactive case-based format.

The lecturers in this course are pre-eminent experts in their fields, who have also demonstrated superior skills at presenting material of this type to large audiences.  This year’s speakers include Drs. Colleen Tomcik, Ralph Jozefowicz, Andrew Southerland and Jonathan Marcus.  Dr. Tomcik is an Assistant Professor of Neurology in the General Neurology Unit at the University of Rochester and will be speaking on Headache.  Dr. Jozefowicz is Professor of Neurology and Medicine, and Associate Chair for Education in the Department of Neurology at the University of Rochester and will be speaking on the Five Minute Neurological Examination.  Dr. Southerland is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Virginia and will be speaking on Stroke.  Dr. Marcus is an Associate Professor of Neurology in the Sleep Disorders Unit at the University of Rochester and will be speaking on Sleep Disorders.

Needs Assessment

Over 50 million Americans will visit a physician with a chief complaint referable to the nervous system.  Only a small percentage of these patients will consult with a neurologist, with the vast majority being evaluated and managed by primary care providers.  A large number of office visits to physicians are made by people over the age of 65, and as the population of the United States ages, this number will continue to grow.  Because the elderly have the highest burden of neurological illness, the number of office visits related to the nervous system will far exceed the growth in population.

Advances in neurology have exceeded all expectations during the past decade.  New treatments have become available for headache, stroke and sleep disorders. Neurology is one of the fastest changing fields in all of medicine, and has differentiated into numerous well defined complex subspecialties.  These factors make it an enormous challenge to stay current.  The experts developing and delivering the educational content of this program include national leaders in neurologic education and its various subspecialties.

This course is appropriately designed to provide primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses with a thorough, practical, and readily applied treatment update on various types of acute and chronic neurologic disorders.  Topics cover a broad range of conditions, including headache, stroke and sleep disorders.  The goal is to enable participants with the information they need to increase their knowledge base, further improve their skills, and enhance their care of patients with neurologic disorders in the clinical setting.

Learning Objectives:

After participating in this course, practitioners will be able to:

1. Appropriately diagnose and manage patients with headache
