North Carolina League of Municipalities - Advancing Municipal Leaders

The League’s Advancing Municipal Leaders program invites you to attend the New Mayors School and/or Newly Elected Official Academy this winter at eleven locations statewide.

These courses are perfect for recently-elected municipal officials who are in the first few months of office. Training content will provide practical skill development that will help to improve decision making, add value in citizen related interactions, and reduce municipal risk.

Please note that some locations are designated as either Council-Manager or Mayor-Council trainings where course content will focus on that particular form of government.

Course Objectives:

  • Gain practical information about the key roles and responsibilities of being a municipal elected official during the first few months in office.
  • Get an overall understanding of municipal authority and the impacts on local policy in a useful and meaningful way.
  • Acquire skills, tools, best practices/solutions, and approaches that can immediately be put to use back in participants’ cities or towns.
  • Opportunity to network with and learn from other municipal elected officials facing similar experiences, challenges, and issues.

Cost to attend:

Registration is $80 for members and $90 for Non League Members (Lunch will be provided). Cancellations will be allowed until one week before the training (minus a 50% cancellation fee). Less than one week prior to the training, no partial refunds will be provided.
