Tips for the retiree editor
Retiree newsletters and websites serve a different purpose than in-service publications. Learn how to improve your newsletter’s content, get more of your members involved and keep them informed. Brainstorm story ideas that will liven up your pages and find out how planning calendars, templates and other resources will
make your life as an editor easier.

Photography (El-Wise Noisette)

Whether on websites or in publications, images help you show member involvement and local or chapter participation.   Be prepared to discuss your challenges and successes with photos in this interactive session.  Bring your questions and samples of work for constructive critiques.  Technical handouts will be provided on developing photo galleries on the Web and processing images for newsletters.

Getting Started: Tips for the New Editor (Darryl McGrath)

Are you a new editor of your chapter or local newsletter? Not sure how to begin? This workshop will provide tips on content, how to recognize and avoid libel, how the Freedom of Information Act can be used by you – and against you – and how to set the tone for your publication.  A practical guide to writing and editing a page-turner of a newsletter that your members will really want to read.

Facebook 101 (Bryan Thomas)

We will look at Facebook pages of local unions and show you how to launch a page for your local.

11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Page Design (Cynthia DeMichele)

Capture your readers with good page design, utilizing type and graphics that effectively convey your message and brand your organization.  Elements of publications, visual flow, dos & don’ts, production, paper and printing options will all be discussed.

Editing, Proofing and Headlines (Clarisse Banks)

Learn the ABCs of copy-editing, including how to write effective headlines, the essential elements of a news story and a feature story, the basics of style, how to find and correct errors in copy and some useful tips for proofreading your work.

Feeding the Beast for the In-Service Editor (Liza Frenette and Sylvia Saunders)

New and seasoned editors alike will learn inventive, interesting and simple ways to generate meaningful copy for your local union newsletter.  We will review different categories of writing and discuss ways to inspire more members to contribute.

Managing Your Website (Bryan Thomas)

Learn how your colleagues are using their websites to communicate with their members and local communities.
