On Demand: Assessment of Cognition and Depression in the Aging Patient Using the St. Louis University Mental Status (SLUMS) Exam and the Geriatric Depression Scale


The purpose of this education activity is to enhance the assessment skills of the long-term care registered nurse in the area of cognition and depression by addressing the performance and utilization of the SLUMS Exam and Geriatric Depression Scale.  The activity aims to improve interventions and treatment for patients in long-term care settings as evidenced by the RN’s achievement of all activity objectives and a passing score on the activity post-test.


At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:
  1. demonstrate how to assess a patient’s cognitive abilities by the administration of the SLUMS Exam;
  2. demonstrate how to assess for depression in a geriatric patient by the administration of the Geriatric Depression Scale;
  3. discuss the importance of clinical judgment and consideration of circumstances when scoring a geriatric patient’s SLUMS Exam and Geriatric Depression Scale.
This program offers 1.0 contact hour for Nurses, 1.0 contact hours for Social Workers, 1.0 CEU for Nursing Home Administrators, Assisted Living Facility Managers, Hospice Administrators and other alternate administrators.
