On Demand - Common Geriatric Emergencies in Long Term Care and Assisted Living


This informative program was developed to provide professional long term care staff with the information required to define acute change of condition in the long term care and assisted living setting as it relates to the MDS (Minimum Data Set), Quality Indicators and data and medical history/related data and potentially life-threatening events.
What is a sentinel event?  Discuss the implications of early recognition of acute changes of condition in the long term care and assisted living setting. The instructor will outline best practices to facilitate clear communication of critical information to the physician.
You will identify current AMDA protocols for assessment and physician notification for:
  1. Falls - Initial assessment of the resident who has fallen; physical data and medical history/related data; and performing a post-fall evaluation.
  2. Chest pain, pressure or tightness - Implications of resident’s DNR status; physical data and medical history/related data; and assessment for transfer.
  3. Acute onset of confusion - Physical data and medical history/related data; and current research findings differentiating delirium vs. dementia.
  4. Acute abdomen symptoms - Physical PLUS review case studies and learn about assessment and physician notification of a resident by utilizing the best practices outlined by AMDA.

This program offers 2.0 Contact Hours for Social Workers, 2.0 Clock Hours for Long Term Care Administrators and Assisted Living Facility Managers, 2.0 CEUs for Hospice Administrators and other alternate administrators.
