On Demand: Dehydration in Long Term Care- The Nurses Role in Guiding the Interdisciplinary Team

Summary

Resident characteristics and institutional factors directly affect the incidence of dehydration among residents in long term care facilities.  Learning how to guide and instruct the interdisciplinary team in addressing the on-going challenge of hydration is critical for this population.  Prepare yourself to appropriately identify each team member’s role in the prevention of dehydration within their facilities.

At the completion of this program, participants will:
  1. Identify the four major hydration habits among residents in long term care.
  2. List ten essential conditions that must be addressed on a resident’s plan of care to guide the interdisciplinary team in addressing hydration requirements for residents.
  3. Be prepared to instruct and guide direct care givers to recognize and report signs and symptoms of dehydration.
  4. Identify five areas for intervention that should be addressed by the interdisciplinary team.
  5. Discuss one issue associated with those who elect withholding fluids at end of life and one issue associated with opponents for withholding fluids at end of life.
