On Demand: Elopement-What Every Nurse in Long Term Care Needs to Know!

Summary

Caring for persons with dementia who wander calls for staff decision-making regarding elopement prevention and response should elopement occur. Few receive education to address the issues of problematic wandering and elopement risks. This presentation will provide a framework and aid to better understand the wandering behavior and be prepared to react appropriately should an elopement occur.

 
At the completion of this program:
  1. Participants will differentiate between goal-directed wandering and non-goal directed wandering.
  2. Participants will list seven conditions/issues that may trigger wandering.
  3. Participants will list essential components for developing a procedure and policy in the event if resident elopement.
