On Demand: Shingles: What Everyone Needs to Know!


The purpose of this activity is to enhance the knowledge of long term care staff and other members of the interdisciplinary team by providing current pathology, infection control, and nursing best practices guidelines to assist them in their plan of care for residents at risk for or with shingles infection in the long term care setting.

At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:
  1. describe current trends related to the prevalence of shingles in the long term care (LTC) setting. 
  2. identify factors that increase the risk for infection with shingles in the LTC setting.
  3. describe best practices for admission, placement and control of infection with residents having shingles in the LTC environment.
  4. understand postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) and nursing interventions to help the patient cope with PHN.
This program offers 1.0 Contact Hour for Nurses, 1.0 Contact Hour for Social Workers, 1.0 Clock Hours for Long Term Care Administrators and Assisted Living Facility Managers, 1.0 CEU for Hospice Administrators and other alternate administrators.
