Palliative care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses and other specialists who work together with a patient's other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. It's appropriate at any age and at any state in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment. In addition to a thorough exploration of the multifaceted nature of pain and the assessment/management of many different types of pain, other symptoms that challenge care providers caring for those with serious illnesses will also be explored. Emphasis will be placed on effective communication skills within the context of a multidisciplinary team, conflict identification and resolution, how to help people examine their goals of care, ethical/legal issues, end of life decision making. Students will also gain techniques for the development of a variety of skills that will aid in objectively providing care and support to seriously ill people and their families.
