Pain Management

Summary

CE Hours: 2 Lecture

David A Keith, BDS, FDSRCS, DMD, professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Harvard School of Dental Medicine

This course will cover the educational requirements of the Massachusetts statute MGL 94C, Section 18(e) which requires all prescribers to take a course in pain management. The content of the program will include: effective pain management, identification of patients at high risk of substance abuse, counseling patients about the side effects, addictive nature, and proper storage and disposal of prescription medications. Dentists encounter many patients in acute or chronic pain and need to be able to evaluate these patients efficiently and recognize dental and non-dental causes of pain. Based upon a sound diagnosis appropriate medications, including opioids, can be prescribed with the necessary warnings and precautions. Other aspects of good practice management including record keeping, referrals, and consultations will be discussed.
