Course Description

This course is designed to engage the medical and legal professions in discussions focused on medical malpractice. The target audience is clinicians, (attendings, residents, fellows, medical students) judges and lawyers. By using real clinical scenarios with embedded medical malpractice questions, this activity encourages academic dialogue regarding both scientific and legal concerns.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe appropriate and inappropriate use of social media for purposes of disseminating medical information.
  • Understand the implications of metadata with regards to social media and medical malpractice
  • Understand how a malpractice case, as exemplified by the case presented (questionable post on social media about a medical case), evolves over time starting from the date of event occurrence, involvement of risk management, filing of a complaint, retention of lawyers, and decisions about settlement vs. litigation.
