The Province recognizes the goal of greater consistency in technical building requirements in B.C. needs to be balanced against reasonable flexibility for local governments to set technical building requirements to meet local needs. Under the Building Act, local government variations are one option for doing so.A local government variation is a building requirement or set of requirements that differs from requirements in provincial building regulations, and can be requested of the Province by a local government or group of local governments. If the request is approved, the variation is enacted in a provincial building regulation that applies in the jurisdictions of the local governments making the request.Learn about the application process, opportunities to collaborate with other local governments on variation requests, the application form and role of supporting documents, the review criteria, review costs and other application details.
