Provider Directory Advances in California

A key issue for health plans, providers, and consumers is the accuracy of provider directories. They are considered an important tool for people who are looking to enroll in health plans and to select providers. Provider directories containing errors can lead to problems among consumers and may lead to increased costs for consumers who receive care that is out of their plan’s network. California regulators now have the role of advancing rules mandating changes to provider directories, and health plans stand ready to work with California on the best ways to update provider directories. Today’s discussion on the future of provider directories in California will: examine the state’s work in implementing new rules on provider directories, discuss a vision for “multi-plan” directories and where they are headed, the Department of Health Care Services’ efforts to build a provider database for Medi-Cal providers, and lessons learned nationally and here in California from recent pilot projects on provider directories.
