The application period for ECS Travel Awards closed on 1 December 2017. 

The Pacific Seabird Group Executive Council (PSG ExCo) is pleased to announce the opening of a new travel award in 2018, the Early Career Scientist (ECS) Travel Award.

The deadline to apply for the ECS Travel Award to attend the 2018 PSG Annual meeting in La Paz is Friday, 1 December 2017, 5pm PST.  Submit your ECS Travel Award application electronically, via email to pastchair@pacificseabirdgroup.org 

You are eligible for an ECS Travel Award if you have less than 5 years of experience in your current position as a:

  1. U.S. or Canadian postdoc
  2. technician or research assistant
  3. recent BA/BS, MS or PhD graduate, not a current student
  4. new faculty or research scientist

Each year PSG's Silent Auction raises money during the annual meeting to help students and scientists with their travel expenses.  

The application period for Student and Foreign Scientist Travel Awards closed on 15 November 2017. 

PSG gratefully accepts donations to help support travel awards; donations can be made at any time of year including during registration of the annual meeting. All donations are tax deductible. Please consider donating today and help to bring more early career scientists to the annual meeting.

Application Instructions

To apply for an Early Career Scientist Travel Award, prepare a short, 500-word essay that explains why you need the award and your financial situation to pastchair@pacificseabirdgroup.org as an attached document, or as text within the email. In addition, submit an abstract for an oral or poster presentation via Cvent.

Please include the following in your essay – missing information makes it difficult to assess the merits of your request. The essay should be 500 words and answer the following questions:

  • Are you currently employed? If so, what is your position and position length?
  • Presentation type, oral or poster?
  • Are you presenting in a Special Paper Session or Symposia?
  • Is this your first time attending a PSG meeting? If not, in what year(s) have you attended?
  • Is this your first time presenting at PSG? If not, in what year(s) have you presented?
  • What amount are you requesting from PSG? (USD$)
  • What is the total estimated cost for your attendance at the meeting? (USD$)  Please include airfare or mileage, lodging, meals, and registration.
  • Do you have other sources of funding?  Please indicate the source and the amount.
  • What are you doing to keep your costs as low as possible? Are you sharing lodging or volunteering at the meeting?
  • Have you served, do you serve, or do you plan to serve PSG in any formal capacity (e.g., member of committee, volunteer at previous conference)
  • What are your career ambitions, or where do you see yourself in five years?
  • Please include any additional work/school/volunteer experience helpful in evaluating your application.

Notification will be provided by 5 December 2017 and ECS Travel Awards must be accepted by notifying the Awards Committee Chair in writing (email) no later than 26 December 2017. All travel awards that are not accepted will be redistributed to other applicants on 27 December 2017.

Student and Foreign Scientist Travel Award Applications closed 15 November 2017. 

Notification for Student and Foreign Scientist Travel Awards will be provided by 5 December 2017 and travel awards must be accepted by notifying the Travel Award Chair in writing (email) no later than 26 December 2017. All travel awards that are not accepted will be redistributed to other applicants on 27 December 2017.
