The Pacific Seabird Group Executive Council (PSG ExCo) offers Travel Awards for three categories of scientists: students (all nationalities), non-US/Canada scientists, and Early Career Scientists (ECS).

You are eligible for a Student Award if:

  • you are currently enrolled in high school, an undergraduate program, or a graduate program; AND
  • you have not received a PSG Travel Award since 2016

You are eligible for a non-US/Canada Scientist Award if:

  • you are a resident in a country other than the USA or Canada; AND
  • you have not received a PSG Travel Award since 2016

You are eligible for an ECS Travel Award if you have less than 5 years of experience in your current position as a:

  • U.S. or Canadian postdoc
  • technician or research assistant
  • recent BA/BS, MS or PhD graduate (not a current student)
  • new faculty or research scientist

AND have not received a PSG Travel Award since 2016.

Deadlines

  • Applications Open: Monday, 10 September 2018
  • Application Deadline: Friday, 16 November 2018, 11:59pm PST - CLOSED
  • Notifications: Monday, 10 December 2018
  • Award Acceptance: Monday, 17 December 2018

Notification will be provided by 10 December 2018 and Travel Awards must be accepted by notifying the Awards Committee Chair in writing (email) no later than 17 December 2018. All travel awards that are not accepted will be redistributed to other applicants beginning on 18 December 2018.

Application Instructions

To apply for a PSG Travel Award, prepare a short (<500 word) essay that explains why you need the award and your financial situation. Upload this essay along with your abstract submission for an oral or poster presentation via the registration process. Your abstract and travel award essay both need to be uploaded by the November 16 deadline to be considered for this award. 

 

Please include the following information in your essay – missing information makes it difficult to assess the merits of your request:

  • What type of award are you applying for (Student, non-US/Canadian Scientist, or ECS)? 
  • Are you currently employed? If so, what is your position and position length?
  • Presentation type, oral or poster?
  • Are you presenting in a Special Paper Session or Symposia?
  • Is this your first time attending a PSG meeting? If not, in what year(s) have you attended?
  • Is this your first time presenting at PSG? If not, in what year(s) have you presented?
  • What amount are you requesting from PSG? (USD$)
  • What is the total estimated cost for your attendance at the meeting? (USD$) Please include airfare or mileage, lodging, meals, and registration.
  • Do you have other sources of funding?  Please indicate the source and the amount.
  • What are you doing to keep your costs as low as possible? Are you sharing lodging or volunteering at the meeting?
  • Have you served, do you serve, or do you plan to serve PSG in any formal capacity (e.g., member of committee, volunteer at previous conference)
  • What are your career ambitions, or where do you see yourself in five years?
  • Please include any additional work/school/volunteer experience helpful in evaluating your application.
