New Program - Limited Sessions
Public safety work is dangerous, as police officers and firefighters routinely address changing conditions in the field. Training is essential for all public safety personnel in order to perform their duties effectively and safely. However, injuries during training can incur substantial costs, resulting in overtime and shift changes, personnel stress, potential re-injury, physical deconditioning, and employee disconnect.
A Potential Solution to Prevent Training Injuries
The Training Safety Officer (TSO) Program, developed by the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust in conjunction with fire and police departments, is a low-cost method of incorporating safety controls without diminishing other training objectives. The program recommends that departments implement a safety officer assignment during hands-on training.
Students will be able to:
Analyze relevant experience to review the need and components of a safety plan for hands-on training in order to reduce injury potential.
Relate steps and issues for proper site inspection and setup.
Demonstrate the Training Safety Officer's role and responsibilities in conducting a Safety Briefing and appraise practical examples.
Apply components of a properly controlled training session to ensure safety and prepare checklists.
Measure effectiveness of the program with debriefing and reporting.
Who should attend?
Chiefs and other ranks with supervisory oversight, as well as training officers or coordinators should attend. This program is designed as a "Train-the-Trainer" program. Attendees can train others as Training Safety Officers or serve as the TSO for their department.
**TCOLE hours pending approval.
**Participating departments will receive a safety vest.
