Poor operating procedures have been linked to nearly 70% of all human performance problems within the process industries, however the cause of this is not simply poor procedures. The content of procedures is obviously a key feature in ensuring tasks are carried out correctly, but considering the human element in procedure design can help ensure tasks are performed in a consistent, safe manner.

For a procedure to be useful it must not only be accurate and reflect the process to be undertaken but also fulfill other criteria. It must be physically manageable, it must reflect the skill level of its users, it must deal with abnormal and emergency actions and above all the users must find it useful to them in carrying out the task.

The purpose of this lunchtime forum is to address putting the human element into your procedures, designing them to not only provide operating guidance but to also reduce the risk of error, to aid training and to ensure operator competence in all aspects of plant operation.
