Qualitative Research Methods for Public Health

Overview

The use of qualitative research methods in public health research, such as program evaluations and clinical trials, is increasingly common. This short course aims to introduce participants to the theories, concepts and practice of qualitative research. Participants will gain practical skills in employing qualitative research designs, data collection and analysis, and in particular, learn how to meaningfully incorporate qualitative research with other research methods and study designs. Participants will be asked to submit a brief overview of current or intended research to help inform the development of practical exercises for the course.


Qualitative Research Methods for Public Health is most suitable for:
Clinical and allied health professionals, psychologists, public health researchers, PhD students interested in using qualitative research methods

The course will be broken down into the following topics:
DAY 1: RESEARCH DESIGNS
- Principles and concepts of qualitative research
- Overview of qualitative research designs
- Overview of mixed methods research designs
- Questions and wrap up of the day

DAY 2: DATA COLLECTION
- Qualitative data collection techniques
- Practical application of data collection techniques (participants will conduct practice interviews, focus groups and participant observation)
- Ethics in qualitative research

DAY 3: CODING
- Introduction to qualitative analysis (frameworks, coding)
- Coding workshop
- Making sense of your analysis
- Communicating your findings (writing for publication)

Further information:
- Participants will be asked to submit a brief overview of current or intended research to help inform the development of practical exercises for the course
- Course materials include lecture / seminar slides and key reading, which will be provided via USB stick
- Participants are not required to bring a laptop to this course.
