Each student is provided a package of practice problems prior to the course.
These must be completed and brought to the course.
Student performance will be evaluated by a practical examination consisting of basic radar navigation position fixing, plotting radar contacts to determine risk of collision, and action taken to avoid collision.
This one day course provides refresher training in: the use of radar to maintain situational awareness; the Rules of the Road appropriate to the use of radar; the methods used to determine a contact’s range, bearing, CPA, time to CPA, course and speed; and how to determine own ship’s course and speed changes to avoid collision; reviews radar navigation techniques such as taking bearing and ranges and plotting fixes to obtain the ship’s position. Mariners enrolling for this course should possess a valid US Coast Guard license with radar endorsement. This course is intended for candidates for re-certification of the radar endorsement required for license renewal and STCW endorsement.
USCG and IMO Standards
This is a USCG approved course. The student successfully completing this Radar Observer Recertification (MARTSI-402) course will satisfy the licensing requirements of 46 CFR 10.209, 46 CRF 10.305 (c)(4), and 46 CFR 10.480(d) for re-certification as Radar Observer (Unlimited), and the radar training requirements for Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 GT and over.

Lodging and Meals
USMRC offers a wide variety of lodging options ranging from economy to luxury in and around historic Newport – all within very close driving proximity to our facilities – and we have negotiated special discount rates with several select properties. These discounted rates are only available by booking through the USMRC Registrar. For meals, we do not provide breakfast or dinner as most of our students prefer to take advantage of the large selection of dining options available in nearby Newport. For the budget minded, a few of our select lodging properties provide breakfast and/or dinner included in the lodging rate. Lunch – for a nominal fee, USMRC provides custom made to order box lunches catered from a local delicatessen and delivered right to our facility.
Students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements. The closest airport to us is Green Airport (PVD) located in Warwick, Rhode Island which is approximately 30 miles / 40 minutes driving time from our facilities. Logan Airport (BOS) in Boston is 75 miles / 90-100 minutes driving time away. For rail transport, Amtrak serves both Providence and Boston’s South Station and bus service is available from both rail stations to/from nearby Newport.
