Session Presenters

 Ian Welle

Ian Welle, Principal, Polar Engineering, focuses on the engineering and project management of safety focused ammonia, CO2, and freon refrigeration system. He particular enjoys using this expertise to engineer low global warming potential energy recovery systems. These systems take waste heat from an arena, ocean, sewage, or the air to provide all the heat and hot water for a recreation facility.

To do this, Ian works closely with governing bodies and is an accredited BC Hydro Alliance Member giving his clients access to energy recovery government grants. This experience has allowed him to become the lead engineer responsible for the CO2 cooling systems for the two largest telescopes being built in Hawaii and Chile
Ian is excited to continue pushing the envelope by designing high temperature hot water heat pumps which drastically reduce the fossil fuel consumed in a facility, while keeping capital costs down. “

 Scott Melton

Scott Melton, Chief of Training and Operations, ASTI, is a Graduate of JM Perry Technical Institute and a Journeyman Pipe fitter. Scott spent 34 years in and around the Ammonia Refrigeration Industry as a Facility Operator, Service Tech, and Compliance, Training and Special Projects Manager, Licensed Electrician, Thermographer, RETA, IIAR Member, Certified Instructor and Currently is the Chief of Operations and Training at the Ammonia Safety and Training Institute.

 Art Sutherland

Art Sutherland is the Founder and President of Accent Refrigeration Systems of Victoria BC. Art graduated from the Nova Scotia Technical College with the highest marks in the province and an honors diploma in refrigeration technology in 1976.

Over the last 40 years Art has designed or installed more than 250 ice rinks around the world with an emphasis of improving energy efficiency and recovering waste heat.

Art sits on the International ASHRAE Engineering Board for Ice Rink Design and was responsible for re-writing the latest handbook section for ice rink best practices.

Art has worked for the International Olympic Committee for three Olympics including the design oversight for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games.

 Hamid

Hamid Azarnoush, Boilers and Pressure Vessels Senior Safety Officer, TSBC,  graduated from UBC with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and is a registered professional engineer in British Columbia. Hamid has more than 13 years of experience as design engineer in the field of Refrigeration utilizing both natural and synthetic refrigerants. During these years, he has worked on many recreational, industrial, and mining projects across Canada and the US; projects such as Whistler Sliding Centre for 2010 Winter Olympics and Langley Event Centre, etc.

Recently, Hamid joined Technical Safety BC as Boilers and Pressure Vessels Senior Safety Officer, supporting the organization’s safety officers and clients with technical clarifications on the safety requirements of regulated items and regulated works in the boilers, pressure vessels, and Refrigeration technology.
