What Do Orthodontists Know About TMD, and What Do They Need to Know?

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) refers to a spectrum of clinical problems that involve the masticatory muscles, the TMJ, and/or the associated structures. While studies have revealed that 40-75% of the adult population has at least one sign of joint dysfunction, and 33% have at least one symptom of dysfunction, it is challenging to identify the precise source of the pain (muscle or joint).  It is true with all dental and orthodontic management that the key to proper treatment is proper diagnosis.  However, it is relatively unclear what the practicing orthodontist knows about TMD.  The challenge of diagnosing and managing TMD is highly relevant and timely for dentists and orthodontists as it aligns with the shift toward personalized and precision medicine in the U.S. This presentation will: a) provide the orthodontists with some “tools” that can be used in clinic when diagnosing a TMD patient; b) make orthodontists aware of their current knowledge and beliefs regarding TMD, so each can identify their weaknesses and strengths in this field, and c) assess where the orthodontic residency programs of the future should review the basis of how they train orthodontists about TMD.

Workflow and How It Supports A Positive Patient Experience!

Let's Discuss How To Create A Positive and Profitable Workflow In Orthodontics Today.

There are so many communications for which the orthodontic team is responsible on a daily basis. This course is designed for both the clinical and clerical team. The information to be presented will describe the workflow from the new patient phone call to the final dismissal appointment. How we use technology and written communications to the advantage of the practice is key! If setup properly, the workflow system will create the efficiency needed to provide the highest level of patient experience.

A Very Long View in the Development of “Digital Orthodontics”

The orthodontic specialty, as well as the dental profession, is very focused on many technologies which may be considered anywhere from core technologies to peripheral or adjunct technologies. In this presentation, Dr Sarver will actually reach back into history and look at technologies that were “hot” at the time, but are rarely seen today.  He will discuss reasons they may have failed to get traction or may as have yet to have reached a level of recognition and appreciation. He will then relate that to our current technologies so that we may properly embrace new technologies, or recognize that they will be temporary and disappear as many other technologies have done.

    1. Matt Hendrickson

Intraoral impression scanners are quickly becoming an important part of every orthodontic practice. Most importantly, orthodontists are recognizing that the real benefit of digital impressions go far beyond just sending out for clear aligners.
This course will discuss how digital impression scanners can help you combine the power of your digital scanner with a 3D printer to create appliances in house and even generate your own clear aligners for simple cases.  We will also review how you can use your scanner to increase case acceptance, improve patient comfort, reduce appointments and eliminate storage of traditional models.
