Luis Cruz, Ph. D.

As educators, we're in the business of saving lives. In this passionate keynote, Luis sets the tone for the rest of the day by identifying the critical characteristics educators must embrace to ensure success for each and every student. His reminder of all the reasons you chose the teaching profession in the first place will leave you inspired, re-charged, and determined to maximize your impact.

Session: 10:00 - 10:50 AM
Not Light, But Fire:
How to Lead Meaningful Race Conversations in the Classroom
Matthew Kay

We will discuss how to prepare a classroom environment that is ready for meaningful conversations about race. Matt will model conversational structures and lead a discussion where teachers share, then hone, their conversational practice.

Break: 10:50-11:05 AM

Session: 11:05 - 11:55 AM
To Know & Nurture a Reader
Kari Yates & Christina Nosek

Conferring practice that really works is within the reach of any teacher committed to build it. Yet, with limited time, a room full of diverse readers, and increasing curricular demands, it’s not uncommon for teachers to experience overwhelm and uncertainty when it comes to the practice of conferring. We’ll share how leaders can support teachers in exploring four directions for conferring and guiding questions that will boost any conferring practice to become more reader-centered and intentional.

Lunch Break: 11:55-1:30 PM
Explore lunch-time topic tables designed to let you get some of your most pressing questions answered about topics such as locating appropriate funding sources, the impact of handwriting on student achievement, teacher wellness, and more.

Session: 1:30 - 2:20 PM
Who’s Doing the Work?
Jan Burkins & Kim Yaris

Could there be times your teachers are doing the work for students, creating dependency and interfering with student growth? Help teachers make simple adjustments to instruction that lead to powerful shifts in student engagement and empower students to persevere in becoming better readers.

Session: 2:30 - 3:20 PM
What to do When Poverty Stands in the Way of Learning
Cheryl Smith Turner, Ed.S.

In this session, Cheryl examines the impact of poverty and environmental stressors on learning and behavior and shares practical ways to break down the barriers that separate children from all that they are capable of.

Break: 3:20-3:35 PM

Session: 3:35 - 4:25 PM
The School Leader’s Toolbox - Discipline, Management, & Engagement
Bryan Harris, Ed.D.

Help your teachers create well-managed classrooms where students are engaged and discipline problems minimized. Bryan offers easy-to-use strategies and interventions to support you as you develop or refine school-wide plans, work with individual teachers, and tackle factors impacting behavior in both your classrooms and school.

Cocktail Reception: 4:30 - 5:30 PM
