Self-Study CE Course:
Infection Control and Prevention

Infection control and prevention is an important focus of everyday patient care in the practice of dentistry. Unfortunately, many oral health care professionals do not closely adhere to the many protocols and guidelines that the CDC and individual states have established. Encountering patients with a known infection, or a situation where there is a lapse in sterilization, reminds of us of the importance of keeping patients and providers safe. At this moment, infection control and prevention is at the forefront of minds both within and outside of healthcare as COVID 19 has thrust this important topic into the spotlight. With this course, we will look at common infectious agents that we may encounter in dentistry as well as review the CDC guidelines and State of Ohio Dental Board protocols to avoid disease transmission.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss common pathogens and signs/symptoms of infection caused by these pathogens
  • Identify ways to prevent disease transmission in the dental office
  • Review CDC guidance and State of Ohio Dental Board protocols for infection control
  • Discuss the importance and techniques of hand hygiene
  • Review respiratory hygiene guidelines to prevent the spread of disease
  • Introduce the CDC checklist for infection control and prevention in dental offices
