Medical Emergencies: Dental Office Medical Emergencies for the Healthcare Provider

This 4 credit hour self-paced course is designed to give the participant a better understanding of the causes and contributing factors of dental medical emergencies, while recognizing the signs and symptoms of possible emergencies that may occur in the dental office. The participant will be able to describe initial treatment indicated, incorporate the knowledge of prevention techniques, and state stress reduction protocols.

This course has been approved by the Ohio State Dental Board as an acceptable CE program for the Medical Emergency Recognition Course requirement for all Ohio dental auxiliary who wish to practice when the dentist is not physically present. (Additional requirements include CPR certification and one year active practice and 1,500 hours of experience in dental hygiene practice; and two years of active practice and 3,000 hours of experience for CDA/EFDA).

Participants in this program will learn:

(1) the importance of current and accurate medical history information for each of your patients
(2) the causes and contributing factors of dental medical emergencies
(3) basics of airway management
(4) how to recognize the signs and symptoms
(5) to describe initial treatment indicated
(6) knowledge of prevention techniques
(7) office emergency and stress reduction protocols
