The SickKids Advanced Paediatric Cardiology Program is designed to meet the needs of health care clinicians interested in advancing their knowledge of evidence based care for paediatric cardiac patients.
This program aims to provide the necessary bridge between research and patient care delivery, influencing health care outcomes.
This course is accredited by the Centre for Professional Development, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto. The program is delivered by subject matter experts from a variety of disciplines such as Paediatric Cardiovascular Surgeons, Intensivists, Anaesthesiologists, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Researchers. Learners are exposed to and learn specialized paediatric cardiac acute-care clinical skills grounded in evidence and industry best practices. Examples of skills include, but are not limited to: interpretation of 15 lead electrocardiograms, chest radiography (X-rays), arterial blood gases and haemodynamic values, application of defibrillation, cardioversion and transcutaneous pacing, removal of chest tubes and pacing wires and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) monitoring. This program captures learner interest through a variety of learning modalities including: interactive lectures, small group work, simulation and seminar based discussions.
By far, the most innovative learning modality offered is the expert-guided heart specimen laboratory series. During these sessions, learners experience opportunities to closely visualize congenital heart defects, acquired heart diseases and surgical procedures. Examples of series topics include, normal heart anatomy, atrial and ventricular septal defects, atrioventricular septal defects, conotruncal abnormalities, transposition of the great arteries, pulmonary valve stenosis and atresia, total and partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, cardiomyopathies, and hypoplastic left heart syndrome.
