SILVAH Training: Oak

The Oak SILVAH training session is an intensive five-day workshop designed to give participants a comprehensive knowledge about forest ecology and management of mixed oak forests.

To Be Covered 

Nearly half of the session is conducted in the field where participants have a chance to apply SILVAH techniques, mark stands for crop tree release and thinning, and view examples of regeneration and overstory management techniques.

What to Bring

  • Field exercises are done in crews and will be conducted regardless of weather, please dress appropriately.
  • Participants are expected to bring a hardhat and standard forest inventory equipment.
  • A laptop, with SILVAH software installed, is helpful, but not required. Current SILVAH software is available on the Web site at www.nrs.fs.fed.us/tools/SILVAH.
  • Participants are responsible for their own meals during the event. There will be a dinner offered Wednesday evening for those interested in participating.
