Event Overview

 What you can expect at our College Board endorsed summer institute:

The Smoky Mountain Advanced Placement Summer Institute is a subject-specific professional development opportunity for teachers. APSI provides teachers with the support and training needed to teach AP courses and to utilize teaching strategies. Teachers come together to exchange ideas and information about AP courses and exams. Smoky Mountain APSI is managed by Maryville College and has an agreement with the College Board, which ensures our program's quality by adhering to specific guidelines and policies.

A variety of topics will be covered in each course depending upon the instructor's lesson plans. Topics to expect include the course's goals, objectives, content, resources, bibliographies, and equipment. It will also review the AP examination and how it is developed and graded. Some other topics may include syllabi, lesson plans, assignments, how to refresh and improve the AP course, recent changes in course descriptions, and vertical teaming.

 

Our courses are taught by experienced teachers who are endorsed by the College Board, allowing you to:

  • Gain insight into the AP exam

  • Network with other AP teachers in your discipline

  • Get ideas for curriculum development

  • Exchange ideas with other AP teachers

  • Share teaching strategies and best practices

 

    FREE Activity Included with Attendance!

    In addition to time in the classroom, we have scheduled social activities such as Mountain Challenge. You will have an opportunity to participate in this fun, get-to-know-you event on the first night of the conference. Mountain Challenge will provide a high-quality outdoor experience, designed especially for AP teachers of all physical skill level.
     
    Continuing Education Units
    The Tennessee Department of Education recognizes Continuing Education Units earned at the APSI for teacher licensing renewal. Teachers with perfect attendance records may receive 3.0 CEU’s for participation in this week-long workshop. Participants from other states should check with their local systems about license renewal credit. Participants who attend 90% or more of the APSI will receive a certificate of participation. Those who miss more than 10% will not be eligible to receive a certificate of participation.
