Wine Intensive: Vins de Provence
(1:30 PM - 3:00 PM)
Enjoy a magical interlude with the “Gold Standard of Rosé” in a superb tasting of Provencal wines selected to display the “Provencal process”, the grape varieties, the appellations, and the unique terroirs that reveal the amazing tripartite balance of power, intensity, and elegance these wines display.
Vin de Mistelle Intensive
(3:30 PM - 5:00 PM)
Vin de Liqueur, Vin de Mistelle, Vin Doux Naturel –do you know the differences and definitions of these French fortified wines?
Explore the different iterations of a small but persistent category of French vins de liqueur that are the very definition of local and rustic. Under EU regulations, Vin de Mistelles are included under Vins de Liqueur (fortified wines), but they are unique in style and process, hearkening back to the oldest agrarian foundations.
Vin de Mistelles are local renditions of the fresh grape must from the harvest, either non-fermented or partially-fermented, with a small amount of the local brandy added to stop fermentation, preserve the fresh grape aromas, and add a boost of brandy resonance to the mix. Some vin de mistelles are lightly flavored, as per local custom, with fruit, herbs or aromatic leaves. Most are used interchangeably as aperitifs and digestifs.
Each Vin de Mistelle is unique, in that it reflects the traditional grape varieties of each region through both grape must and brandy. Experience Pineau de Charentes from the Cognac region. Troussepinete from Poitou. Floc du Gascogne from Armagnac. Macvin from the Alpine Jura. Ratafia from Champagne. Cartagene from the Languedoc. RinQuinQuin from Provence.
Both Master Classes will be conducted by Hoke Harden, CSW, CSE
***Please note that the Master Classes will overlap with the Willamette Valley Winery Tour and the Portland Brewery Tour. Attendees will be unable to participate in both.
