<< CLICK HERE TO REGISTER >>

JSHS is designed to challenge, engage, and publicly recognize students (Grades 9-12) conducting research in the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Individual students compete for scholarships and recognition by presenting the results of their original research efforts before a panel of judges and an audience of their peers. Opportunities for career exploration, research lab visits, peer discussions, and networking are planned. By participating in regional and national symposia, students may:

  • Participate in a forum honoring individual achievement in STEM;
  • Network with peers who have similar interests;
  • Hear research presentations by other students;
  • Develop skills to help prepare for undergraduate and graduate pursuits in STEM fields;
  • Hear nationally renowned scientists speak on their work;
  • Qualify for significant scholarships and other recognition; and
  • Advance to the national symposium.

This year's 2018 JSJSS will include five topic areas sponsored by the Army. One will be for the Best in Nanotechnology & Advanced Materials Science (Additive Manufacturing), for qualified papers from selected students whose research papers apply to this field. The next will be from selected papers that qualify for Best in Robotics & Autonomy. The third will be for Best in Computing, Computer Science & Engineering, among the qualified papers from selected students across this field. The fourth will be for Best in Aerospace & Astrophysics, among the relevant papers submitted by students in this field. The fifth will be for the Best in Environmental & Earth Sciences.

These winners or 1st runner-ups selected from each topic area by Picatinny Arsenal, will receive an invitation to participate as a mentor in support of a week-long summer STEM enrichment program, which includes a presentation of their paper, and a one-day demonstration of our facilities with Army experts, of the respective science topics from this year's symposium. Qualified participants will receive a monetary stipend for the week.
