This institute will focus on supporting district teams that are developing their own model curriculum units using Understanding by Design. This course will introduce participants to ESE’s guidance document Developing Curriculum Units at a Local Level, supporting videos, and the ESE Model Curriculum Unit and lesson templates found at: http://www.doe.mass.edu/candi/model/. Instruction on Understanding by Design, strategies for differentiating instruction, as well as the difference between lesson and unit planning will be covered. Participants will plan and develop a working draft of a model curriculum unit and lessons during summer 2014, and they will complete the draft in two follow-up sessions. By writing a model curriculum unit, participants will gain a thorough understanding of the standards in the units and Understanding by Design. By designing a Curriculum Embedded Performance (CEPA) as part of the unit, participants will construct one performance assessment for the classroom that can be used as part of a District Determined Measure. Participants are expected to complete the final draft of the unit by mid-winter in the 2014-2015 school year. Teams or pairs of educators that would like to design a unit together are encouraged.
Follow-up sessions (fall/winter) will provide time for writing the unit as well as feedback on the unit. Participants can expect that it may take more time than the scheduled follow-up sessions to complete the unit. In follow-up sessions, the institute facilitator and peer participants will provide feedback about the units using the Quality Review Rubrics provided by ESE, see http://www.doe.mass.edu/candi/model/rubrics/.
